    Directing

I began making films when I started studying journalism at university. It was completely extracurricular and fuelled only by my enthusiasm for filmmaking.

Petalled Apologies was my first short film. It was an incredible experience. Since then, I have been finding ways to improve my directing skills.

I am happy to report that my film sets are often some of the most “smooth, unproblematic and calm” that students have worked on.

Time Line was the first film in which I was both directing and acting. It was enjoyable going between pre-prepared notes, self critiquing, and experimentation. It was a great challenge and opened my eyes to the acting experience. As a result, I aim to take a new layer of empathy to actors when instructing them what to do.

    Videography

I am familiar with using Sony NXCAM-100 cameras, and the standard “mojo” kit – an iphone, tripod, and mic. See below for specific examples.

    City of Lincoln Council

I gathered some pictures and footage of a research conference for the City of Lincoln council. The pictures are now used to represent the event via a training poster.

    University of Lincoln

I have worked on some video content for the University of Lincoln. Creating a “day in the life of” video, which can be found on their social media.

  • Adobe

    Adobe

I have been using Abobe programs since I was 16. This started as Photoshop and InDesign. Now I am proficient in using Premiere Pro, Rush and Audition as well.

    Adobe Audition

I learned how to use Adobe Audition for a podcast assessment. This involved removing hesitations, increasing audio levels, normalising, and ensuring the dialogue was clear.

My own podcast was created for the University of Lincoln’s podcasting module. I received a grade of 87 for this. It’s working its way through competitions, so I can’t publish it yet. But if you are interested in hearing it for official reasons, contact me.

    Adobe Premiere Pro and Rush

Through my journalism training, I learned the basics of using Premiere Pro. However, I have been learning more through online courses so I can start to edit short films and documentaries.

I have also edited several episodes of my mini travel series through Rush. This is ideal for social media editing as Rush is a quick way to put together videos.

    Photoshop

Designing posters and editing photos are things I have done with Adobe Photoshop. I am always happy to work to a brief. In the case of these posters, I created the original concept art and then these.

    InDesign

By designing leaflets and booklets, I have learned how to use InDesign. I can create basic designs and have a fair understanding on the program.

Podcasting is becoming an increasingly popular way to enjoy audio-based media. My involvement in podcasting has been great fun. Whether it’s editing, recording, interviewing or planning, podcasting is enjoyable every step of the way.

Quality is important when it comes to podcasting. Quality of presenting, quality of audio, quality of the edit… it is all necessary when differentiating between something worth people’s ears, and something will not interest them.

I have been involved in over 100 episodes of the Southside Broadcasting podcast. I have also created my own podcast as part of my journalism course.

    Radio

Being on live radio is a real buzz. From the “live” light switch-on to the organic way conversation evolves, it feels like a living, breathing experience.

Being involved in Siren Radio as a co-presenter was what made me enthusiastic about audio platforms. I think it’s a privilege keeping people company and being invited into people’s homes through the power of radio.

  • Acting

    Acting

Acting was a really enjoyable experience, and I hope to take on new roles in the coming years. As stated in this article, I believe that autistic women are natural actresses due to the habit of masking. That’s not to say I feel I am at a disadvantage. Measuring my facial expressions, body language, and tone are all necessary tasks for acting.

Directing, writing and acting is a great trinity to learn together; it helps someone understand how creating a character works.

Additionally, through working on radio and podcasts, I understand the importance of using voice to convey emotion and information. I believe that clear communication is paramount to any field. Of course, acting can take a more nuanced approach with communication. This is because the things unsaid on camera are just as important as the things said.

Lincoln’s Steep Hill defies national shoplifting trend

A street of independent shops in Lincoln is defying a national trend of increased shoplifting.

Shoplifting figures are at their highest since records began, according to the Office of National Statistics, with the East Midlands being the most impacted area.

However, Steep Hill in Lincoln appears to have very few reports of shoplifting.

The street is known for its unique retail shops, vintage character and unsurprisingly, its steepness.

With a gradient of 16.12 degrees, shoppers regularly trek up the fourth steepest street in England to reach independent shops, such as Steep Hill Wines, The Pot Shop and On The Hill.

Named Britain’s Greatest Street in 2012 by the Academy of Urbanism, Steep Hill now appears to be championing another achievement: low shoplifting numbers.

Yvette Mills, project manager for Lincoln Big, a business improvement group, said: “We have an intelligent database which the shops sign up to, and we have a security radio link for the shops and pubs in that area.”

Of the five shop owners who were interviewed for this article, all said they had not been impacted by shoplifting.

One of them is Jackie Hodson. She sells fine jewellery in her shop, On The Hill/ Her average sale is £200, but shoplifting is a rare occurrence.

Jackie praises the local policing policy, saying: “The relationship between the police, the council, and the traders, is very good.

“I’ve been open for two and a half years and I had two instances of shoplifting, the last one about a year and a half ago. So, shoplifting is definitely not an issue.”
